Episode #12: Inside Raúl’s Life

On living between bed and drums

A few days ago, I was talking to my grandpa. We usually discuss how life was in his youth, but since we both share a big passion, the conversation shifted to photography. He began using a camera again at 70 years old, after a 50-year break, with the aim of capturing events and daily life. What he said during our conversation made me completely aware of why I love this medium:

“It is a way to enter people’s lives.”

I’ve always been curious about how different individuals and families live their lives, how they decorate their places, what they collect, and what they consider important. Asking to enter someone’s house might usually label you as a weirdo or even a thief. But a camera breaks all those barriers.

And that’s exactly what happened with Raúl.

During my time in London this year, I was constantly drawn to the eastern canals, so much so that they became part of my daily routine. I would run there, take long walks, and interact with people. I spoke about this and freedom in a previous episode (if you missed it, check it out).

One morning, I heard music coming from one of the boats, and I couldn’t resist my inner curiosity, so I knocked.
